After listing my favorite movies, I decided to transition to music. Only this time I thought I'd mix it up a little bit. I don't think I can narrow down my 10 favorite songs of all time. So instead I decided to simply sort my iTunes library and pick a few songs that I've assigned ratings to... I'll sort them by rank in descending order. Then, I'll "randomly" choose three songs from each star rating. For perspective, my iTunes library has 4270 items. Most of them are unrated; I simply haven't gotten around to rating everything. Here goes:
As it turns out, I've flagged 306 songs as five-star worthy. Not a real surprise. Afterall, for the most part I don't add music to my library that I hate.
So, in no particular order...
The Old Apartment - Barenaked Ladies
What can I say? I love The Barenaked Ladies. And, this is definitely one of my all time favorite songs.
Song For the Dumped - Ben Folds
"And don't forget... my black T-shirt"
Jane Says - Jane's Addiction
Takes me back to my high school and college days. Can never get enough Jane's.
405 songs have earned the 4-star rating. Here are three:
She Said She Said - The Beatles
I may not be ready to rank my top 10 all-time songs, but I can gaurantee that Revolver is in my top 10 albums of all time. If you don't own it, please don't mention it to me.
I Ain't Superstitious - Willie Dixon
Love the blues and Willie Dixon is one of the reasons why.
Death Letter - Taildragger
Another blues song, only this time with a southern rock treatment. The Son House version gives me chills. The Taildragger version is a fantastic homage.
272 clocked in at the 3-star level. In fairness, though, these songs could be anywhere from a 4 - 7 on a 10-point scale, so there's a lot of variety here.
I'm A Boy - The Who
"but my mom won't admit it".
Hong Kong Phooey - Sublime
Who doesn't love Saturday morning cartoon theme songs covered by ska punk bands? That's what I thought; no one, that's who!
Who's Driving Your Plane - The Rolling Stones
I bought the "Singles Collection - The London Years" box set while I was still in high-school and I'm still listening to it regularly today. That is staying power.
Only 50 songs have fallen into this bucket. For me 2 stars is a song that doesn't hurt to listen to, but I don't really care if I ever hear it again.
I Got the Message - ZZ Top
Not an indictment of the band, I actually like ZZ Top, just not this song.
My Weakness - Moby
I'm not a huge Moby fan, but I did buy "Play". This song was definitely a weakness on that album.
I'm Moving On - John Lennon & Yoko Ono
2 words : Yoko Ono
7 Items. How did these things find their way into my library in the first place?
Revolution 9 - The Beatles
Would the White Album have been any worse off without Revolution 9? I think not.
He Hates Me - Sarah Johns
I honestly don't even know what this song is. But, since I went to the trouble of rating at 1-star I assume that means I don't want to go back and listen to it to find out.
Kiss Kiss Kiss - John Lennon & Yoko Ono
1 word: Yoko!
