Fake Plastic Pain

So, It's been a while since I since I posted an update about the status of my 101 in 1001 list.  This can partly be attributed to a general laziness of updating the blog.  I've also been fairly busy with a side endeavor that I'm not quite ready to discuss at the moment.  But, more than anything I just didn't feel that I had been making any progress on the list.  After a quick review, though, it seems I've managed to tick off a couple more items.  Here then is the first new update:

Go Rock Climbing in a Gym

This has been on my list for a while.  I've always had a love for the outdoors... and what better way to express that love than to pull on some fake plastic rock in a sweaty gym?  A few weeks back I met up with my friend Jinino and we spent the afternoon doing just that at Upper Limits in downtown St. Louis.

Both of us being n00bs, we opted for the introductory class that consists of about an hour of instruction and then use of the gym for the "rest of the day".  "Rest of the day" is a relative phrase dependent upon how much punishment we were willing to inflict upon ourselves.

The class was great.  The instructor was very laid back (imagine that from a climber!) and helpful about getting our little group (about 6-8 of us) up to speed on the basics and making sure we all understand the importance of safety.

After the class, we wandered around the gym trying out our newfound rock prowess on various routes.  Jinino is definitely a more natural climber than me.  But, I had a great time and left it all on the field.  Turns out I left a little too much on the field.  It took about two days for the shoulder pain to set in.  About another week for it to become excruciating.  And, finally, about 3 MONTHS for it to feel mostly better.

Despite the pain, we're planning a return trip.  The introductory class includes a coupon for a 1/2 price day and I also scored a two-for-one deal on Living Social deals.  That's 3 more days of climbing... better take it easy on the shoulder this time.

I've made some further progress on the list since the last update so hopefully there will be more updates coming soon.
