Songkran Festival

The wife and I made it out to the Wat Phrasriratanaram 28th Songkran Festival this year.  It was on my 101 in 1001 list to do, but unfortunately we arrived a bit late and many of the vendors were already in the process of closing up shop.  Still, we had a good time walking around and sampling some authentic Thai food.  We had some Pad Thai and finished up with Roti.  The Pad Thai was pretty average.  It needed more spice, but I guess when the goal is to be as widely popular as possible, blander is better.  The Roti, on the other hand, was simple but great.  Just plain roti fried with butter, drizzled with sweetened condensed milk, sprinkled with sugar, and then rolled.  Next year we'll make a point to arrive early enough to enjoy more of the festivities.

I ticked a fairly minor accomplishment off the 101 in 1001 List last week; #93. Give up ALL soda for one week.  In fact, tomorrow makes two weeks with no soda at all, not even a diet.  It might not sound like much, but it's a start and I'm a pretty serious soda drinker so it hasn't been easy.  I'm determined to keep it up, though.

Free Beer

A few months ago the wife and I headed down to the city to take the FREE tour of the Anheuser-Busch brewery.  And, in the process, scratch another "to do" off my 101 in 1001 list.  (#63 Tour the AB Brewery)

We had a great time.  I think Gina enjoyed it even more than I did.  We were both amazed by the scale and speed of the operation.  Though, I think the stop at the Clydesdale barn was her favorite part.  She especially loved seeing the Dalmatians.  One of them was active and walking all around the place while the other was just sleeping on the floor while 60 strangers bustled in, talking loudly and taking pictures.  That was one laid back dog.

After the tour we stopped off for our free refreshments.  For me, it was hard to pass up free Stella on tap so that was a pretty easy choice.  Initially Gina said she'd just have soda but I "encouraged" her to not turn down free beer and she went with the Pumpkin seasonal... which I ended up drinking as well.

We had a great time and decided we'd come back again for the "Beer School" tour to learn more about food pairings with the AB beers.  Our first attempt was denied because we arrived too late and the tour was already full.  So, it's still on our list of things to do.

I can't believe I lived in St. Louis for 8 years before making it down there for the tour.  If you're in the area you should definitely check it out.  A word of caution, though, while the tour itself may be free it ends at the Gift Shop (as do all good tours).  The shop is full of AB schwag (hats, t-shirts, keychains, etc.) and, of course, beer.  You can build your own mix-&-match 6 packs of some of the AB "boutique" brands.  Be prepared to spend a few dollars after the free tour.

Elevator Avoidance

I've crossed another item off my 101 in 1001 List.  This time it was #62 - Do Not Use the Elevator at Work in 2010.  I changed jobs in July and my new office is on the 3rd floor.  So, when I started I decided that I would use the stairs instead of the elevator... every day... without exception.  Happy to say that I made it happen.  In fact, I still haven't used the elevator.  Now the stairs are just part of my work routine.

Still a long way to go on this list, but I'm making progress...

Charity - Another One Down...

I recently marked another item off the 101 in 1001 list.  This time it was Donate Something to Charity.  It seems like one of those things that I know is the right thing to do and always plan to do, but rarely ever get around to actually completing.  This time, though, the wife and I went through the closets and came up with a substantial amount of all types of clothes that were in good condition, but that I had no intention of ever wearing again.  We missed our first drop off time by literally 1 minute.  We were at the back loading dock of Goodwill at 6:01pm, but they stopped accepting donations at 6:00pm.  We rang the buzzer anyway, but no one came to take our boxes.  But, Gina came through and left the boxes in her car until she could stop by again when they were open.

Not only another accomplishment from my list, but a good feeling for hopefully helping out some folks in need.
